Round Rock Roofing and Siding Questions

Permits and inspections
Does Round Rock require a permit for a new roof on a house?
No. The city's Building Inspection page says it does not require a permit for a residential re-roof. A roof whose structure is modified needs a remodel permit.
What about siding or windows?
The city's Homeowner Projects page lists siding replacement and window replacement as needing no permit, while still having to meet code.
So who inspects the finished roof?
No one from the city. The owner can check the visible items, and the contractor can supply photos of the hidden ones. The list is on the city rules page.
I live in Brushy Creek. Do Round Rock's rules apply?
Brushy Creek is unincorporated, so the city's rules do not apply there. Williamson County's construction code page does not mention single-family houses. Deed restrictions may still apply.
Is Georgetown the same as Round Rock?
No. Georgetown requires a permit for a new roof, lists the cost at $60, requires the contractor to register and finishes with an inspection.
The 2023 hailstorm
How big was the hail in Round Rock on September 24, 2023?
The National Weather Service says the largest hail in Round Rock was up to 4 inches across, and the largest trained-spotter measurement was 3 inches, at 9:15 PM. The 4-inch report came from the public.
My roof looked fine afterward. Can it still be damaged?
Yes. Hail can knock granules off and bruise the mat under them without leaving a hole. From the ground that is hard to see.
My roof was replaced in 2024. Is there anything to do?
Check it against the owner's checklist once, since no city inspection took place. After that a new roof mostly needs to be left alone.
Will the contractor work with my insurance company?
A contractor can tell you what it found and what the repair would cost. It cannot negotiate or adjust a claim for you, and neither can this site. Coverage questions go to your insurer or agent.
Contractors and cost
Is the contractor licensed?
Texas has no state license for roofing or siding contractors, so there is nothing of that kind to show. Ask for a certificate of liability insurance, references in Round Rock and the warranty in writing.
What does a new roof cost in Round Rock?
This site does not publish prices, because it could not source local figures it trusts. The contractor will measure the roof and give a written estimate.
Does one contractor do both the roof and the siding?
Some do. Say on the form what needs attention so the request goes to a company that handles it.
Does it cost anything to use this site?
No. If you hire the contractor, you pay that company for the work.
Materials
What kind of roof do most Round Rock houses have?
Architectural asphalt shingles are the common roof across Central Texas. Metal shows up on porches, on accents and on some whole houses.
Are impact-resistant shingles worth it here?
They are built to take hail better than standard shingles, and some insurers price policies differently for them. They are not hail-proof. Ask your insurer what it offers before deciding.
What are the side walls of my house made of?
A common layout is stone or brick on the front with horizontal plank siding on the sides, back and upper walls. On an older house that plank may be wood or pressed hardboard, and on a newer one it is more likely fiber cement. A contractor can identify it on sight.
