Round Rock Neighborhoods and Nearby Cities: Whose Rules, What Age of House
Ten places, ordered from the oldest houses to the newest, then the three that are not in Round Rock at all.
Inside the City Limits
For these seven, the City of Round Rock's rule applies: no permit for a house re-roof or siding replacement, and so no city inspection. What differs is the age of the houses and, downtown, the historic rules.
Outside the City Limits
A Round Rock mailing address does not put a house in the City of Round Rock. These three places answer to someone else.

Clay to the East, Limestone to the West
Geology splits this area as well. The Balcones Escarpment divides Williamson County along a line from Jarrell through Georgetown to Round Rock. East of it lie the deep, dark clay soils of the Blackland Prairie. West of it the ground is hilly, with thin soil over limestone.
For a roof the difference is small. For siding and trim it matters more, because clay that swells and shrinks moves a slab a little each season, and rigid boards and caulk joints show it.
