What Georgetown Requires

Short version

A permit is required for a new roof inside Georgetown city limits.

The city lists the permit cost as $60 and requires contractors to register.

When the roof is done, a final inspection is requested online.

A permit is required for a new roof within the City Limits of Georgetown.

Georgetown's permit site goes on to say that contractors must register with the city, that applications and inspection requests go through its online portal, and that the estimated time to process a roofing permit is ten to fifteen business days because of the volume of applications.

Why That Is Good for the Owner

Two things come with a permit that a Round Rock owner does not get.

The first is a registered contractor. A company that has registered with the city has at least identified itself to a public office.

The second is an inspection. Someone who was not paid for the roof looks at it before the file is closed.

The cost is time. Ten to fifteen business days of processing means a Georgetown roof cannot start the day after you sign. After a hailstorm, when every roofer is busy and every owner is anxious, that wait is the main thing to plan around. Ask the contractor to apply the day the contract is signed, and ask what temporary protection is included in the meantime.

Georgetown and Hail

Georgetown was named alongside Round Rock and north Austin in reports of the September 24, 2023 hailstorm.

A weather news site reported hail of 1.5 to 3 inches in the Georgetown and Round Rock areas on the evening of April 22, 2025. This site has not confirmed that event against National Weather Service records, so it is given here as a report, not as a measured fact.

For a Georgetown house, questions for the contractor:

  • Are you registered with the City of Georgetown?
  • Is the $60 permit in the estimate, and who applies for it?
  • Who requests the final inspection, and will I get the result?
  • What covers the roof while the permit is processed?
