What Hail Does to a Shingle

A hailstone knocks the protective granules loose and can crush the mat underneath. From the ground the roof looks the same. Up close there is a dark, soft spot about the size of the stone, often with a ring of loose granules around it.

Left alone, the bruise sheds more granules, the sun reaches the asphalt, and the spot cracks. That process takes seasons, which is why a storm from 2023 can produce a leak now.

Soft metal tells the story faster than shingles do. Dents in roof vents, flashing, gutters and the tops of air conditioner fins show the size and direction of the hail.

What the Inspector Does

  • Walks each slope and marks hits, usually with chalk, inside a test square to count them.
  • Checks ridge caps, which take hail head-on.
  • Looks at vents, flashing and skylight frames for dents.
  • Looks at the walls: chipped paint on siding and dented downspouts on the side the storm came from.
  • Photographs everything and tells you what the pattern means.

An inspection can end with good news. A roof with a few marks and plenty of granules left may simply need watching.

Questions About Hail Damage Roof Inspection

Is it too late to inspect for 2023 hail?

It is not too late to learn the roof's condition. Whether an insurer will still consider a loss from that date is a question for the insurer.

Can I check for hail damage myself?

From the ground you can check gutters, downspouts, window screens and siding for dents and chips. Leave walking the roof to someone with the equipment.

What if the roof was already replaced after the storm?

Then a hail inspection is not what you need. A one-time check of the installation is, because the city did not inspect it.

Same Roof as September 2023?

Say so when you call and ask for an inspection with photos.
